Taking the Next Steps

There are a few steps you can take once you feel more confident that living donation is the right treatment option for you or your loved one.

As a patient with kidney disease you need to first start by calling the transplant facility to begin your evaluation. Once you are told by the transplant team you are eligible for a kidney transplant you need to get listed on the deceased donor waiting list. While this is happening you can start getting the word out to those closest to you regarding your hope of finding a living donor. Often family members and friends come forward expressing their willingness to be tested as a potential living donor upon hearing they can help.

As a family member or friend of someone with kidney disease you can share with the patient your willingness to be considered as a living donor.  If being a potential living donor candidate is not an option for you, you can still support the patient by helping get the word out to others in hopes they may be potential donor candidates. Above all the best thing you can do is support your loved one during their journey.
